New Super Mario Brothers Wii
posted by Marc on January 29, 2010 @ 1:05PM

Super Mario Brothers returns to the Wii, this time with up to 4 player simultaneously on the screen helping to get through the puzzle.

I was hesitant to get this, because it's pretty expensive and I don't know how much better it would be than Super Mario Brothers 3, which you can download on the Wii as well. I also heard the multiplayer is "kinda cool" but really frustrating. Disregarding all of these seemingly valid points, I decided to throw my money away and pick it up anyway.

This game is cool. If you like the feel of Super Mario Brothers 3, you will love this. It can get just as challenging and frustrating as the old games and the multiplayer is really fun (so long as you don't get overly frustrated with taking your time through the levels). I find it's actually more challenging with other people because the difficult sections become even harder trying to get another person with you through them. Nintendo came up with an easy out though in case it's just too frustrating, just have your partner enter their bubble and they'll float around as you finish the section of the level.

All-in-all, I've been pretty addicted to it this past week and would recommend it.

Wii Motion Plus -- dust off that Wii!
posted by GJ on June 16, 2009 @ 6:56AM

Check out this tennis game:

This game is played using the motion plus attachment to the wiimote.  No more just swinging the wiimote--you now have to swing like you would in a real tennis match.  The MP item has three gyroscopes embedded in it, so it can figure out the orientation of the Wii remote in real-time.  The difference is nothing short of amazing.

Even better--it comes with a seamless WiiConnect interface, allowing you to play with the rest of the world in lag-free matches.  It also has a number of party games that look pretty cool.

Prefer golf?  EA's Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 also uses the MP attachment, and it's even BETTER than the tennis game.  No more power meters--how you swing is how you swing (or putt).  Which likely means I'll be spending a lot of time in the virtual trees on the right side of the fairway.  :)

Same Wii, multiplayer action:

New Wii Party Game, making its appearance at Memorial Day!
posted by GJ on May 21, 2009 @ 12:25PM

Honestly, this doesn't really even give you a taste for the game.  It is indeed the "friendship breaking game."  Being competitive as we are, I'm guessing we'll all love it.

Deca Sports review
posted by GJ on May 22, 2008 @ 3:09PM

OK, one of the featured games at Memorial Day will be the heir apparent to Wii Sports--you know, the tennis and bowling game that we play every time we get together.  The game's name in this country is Deca Sports, which should give you some idea of how many sports are included.  For those of you not so proficient with numerical prefixes, I'll give you a hint:  count your fingers.

Check out the video below, then I'll share with you my thoughts as I've played each of them a fair amount so far.  Will any stand up as good multiplayer games at family get-togethers?  Read on and see!

First sport up is Badminton.  First strike against it:  it's only a two player game.  Boo, hiss!  It's like Wii Tennis, in that your player moves on their own, and you just swing your racket.  However, it's nowhere near as clean as Wii Tennis, and instead poor controls mar what could have been a decent game.  It's worth a try, but it won't hold your interest very long.

Next is Archery.  Yup, it's four players.  Yep, the controls work pretty good.  Yep, those of you with poor motor control like me will not do so well.  Yep, you would do well to play this on a BIG TV, especially at the 50m length.  Overally, simple controls, they work well, and it's a fair amount of fun.  Possible keeper.

How is Motorcross?  It's a four player game, but the controls are tough to master.  Realism?  Nah, through that out the door.  It is fun, though, and you can knock each other around to a degree.  Definitely some potential there.

Keeping with the theme, Snowboard Cross is far easier than the previous game, and allows for much more player interaction (read:  the ability to knock your opponent down).  It's fun, it's quick, and it's four players.  I smell a hit here.

Last of the this variety, Kart Racing is no Mario Kart.  Which isn't such a bad thing.  Controls take a bit to get used to, but are better than the Motorcross game.  Again, four players, some player interaction allowed, so this could be fun unless you're playing Steve.

Soccer is, boo hiss, a two player game.  It's fun, but not very quick--especially if you select to play overtime and both you and your opponent lack any scoring skill.  Controls are iffy--too much work to do simple things, and it doesn't distinguish well passing from shooting.  Oh well.

Basketball, on the other hand, is pretty good.  Still a two player game, but one in which the controls....wait.  Nope, this game has control issues, too.  Namely, your players can't figure out what to do when under the basket, resulting in few up-close baskets.  Oh, and by the way, they do have a functional 3-point line.  Control issues aside, this one is better than soccer.

I know, you were wondering when I'd get to Figure Skating.  This is four player, taking turns (obviously).  Controls are good.  Could be fun, if we can get over feeling gay playing it.  :)

Now for the good ones.  First, Volleyball. Four players, pretty good controls, and very competitive.  This will be the Wii Tennis of Deca Sports.  However, the one you're all waiting for is...

...Curling!  You remember how bad the controls were in RTL Winter Games?  This is nothing like that.  It's easy.  It's fun.  And it's going to rock.  Steve must be thrilled!

So, overall--it's ok as a single player game, but not great.  As multiplayer, we'll see this weekend!
