World population distribution
posted by GJ on May 17, 2011 @ 11:29AM
What if the world's countries were given land based on how many people they had, so that their population density matched equally? You might get something that looked like this:

Do you buy scratch-off lottery tickets?
posted by GJ on February 2, 2011 @ 9:59PM
Ever bought a scratch-off lottery ticket? You might want to avoid that in the future--the odds are likely far lower than what the lottery claims. Why? Read about what this Canadian statistical geologist discovered. After reading this, I'm about ready to petition New York to drop the scratch off games entirely.

Swine Flu got you worried?
posted by GJ on April 28, 2009 @ 9:30AM
Never fear--have I got a resource for you! Check in at this blog to get some real (i.e., not panic-driven Main Stream Media drivel) information about the swine flu. It's updated several times a day based on the latest CDC news conferences and also contains some good discussions of the likely outcomes based on most recent findings.

Stuff I'm doing...
posted by GJ on March 2, 2009 @ 3:52PM
Only to post something other than political antagonist posts, here's what yours truly is reading / watching / playing these days. Feel free to post your own items too! Reading: - Sloane Crosley's I Was Told There'd Be Cake: hilarious collection of autobiographical essays.
- Stephen King's Duma Key: just finished it...plodding start, but still an decent ghost story.
- Scott Smith's A Simple Plan: just started it, and oh yes, there will be blood!
- Phil Plait's Death From The Skies!: Literally, "these are the ways the world will end." Way better than Nostradamus, IMO. Fun to read, too! Plait is known as the Bad Astronomer--check out his blog. You can also catch him on the cable specials having to do with astronomy stuff, although not as much as Neil deGrasse Tyson, who also has a book out similar to Phil's, called Death By Black Hole: And Other Cosmic Quandaries. I'll probably read that one next.
Watching: - SciFi's Battlestar Galactica: only a few episodes left! Whatever will SciFi do once it's gone?? Oh, I know! Bring back Eureka!!!
- NHL: hey, the trade deadline is approaching. The Oilers still suck, but the Leafs suck worse. Ha! Ha!
- Top Gear: growing bored with this show, unfortunately. They need to play conkers again.
Playing: - Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. This game is simply a lot of fun. No kids allowed, though. PC
- Bully: must be Rockstar Games month. Not quite as much fun as GTA, but still amusing. Wii
- Rockband 2: I can't sing, can't play drums, and can't do much beyond medium on guitar and bass. Still fun. Wii
- Sins of a Solar Empire: kind of a mashup of Master of Orion and any RTS game you've ever played. Very entertaining, but I'm not convinced it scales well to large galaxies due to its RTS nature. PC
