Baumbach NCAA Pool?
posted by GJ on March 12, 2007 @ 10:52AM

So, who wants to set up the Yahoo Fantasy NCAA pool this year? I keep forgetting, and can't do it from work. :)

Set it up and post the linky here, in either a comment to this post or an entirely new post.

And in other fantasy news, the playoffs have begun for hockey. GJ and Abby get a bye as the #1 and #2 seeds respectively. Darcy (#3) plays Kristen (#6) and Steve (#4) plays Geoff (#5) this week. Marc (#7) and Eric (#8) play next week, methinks. Odds are pretty good the trophy will stay in Glenville, we're just not sure on whose desk it will reside. LOL!!!

Fantasy Hockey '06 Playoffs
posted by GJ on March 18, 2007 @ 9:34PM

Congrats to Kristen, she manhandled Abby to move on to the second round and face Darcy. Good luck with that. ;)

Steve has opened a 5-2 lead on Geoff tonight, but most of the games are still late in the second period, and their match up is close. I still don't know who I'm beating next week.

11:22pm. Oh boy. Steve and Geoff are tied, 3-3. Tie break system goes into effect. Ties are broken by:

1. Goals. nope, still tied.
2. Assists. Poof. Steve wins. Thanks for playing, Geoff.

So, round 2 is set. Darcy vs Kristen, and GJ vs Steve this week.

Early End to a Dynasty?
posted by GJ on March 24, 2007 @ 8:53AM

Going into the weekend, the Motor City Madmen have the listless Dragons in a 9-2 vise grip. Without a minor miracle, the Dragons won't even have a chance to defend their title in next week's championship, and thus a new champion will arise this year.

In other news...the Neanderthals have a slight lead over the Dirty Germans, and the Dark Wildcats are taking our their frustration on the Super Media Men rather effectively.

Watch here for further developments--by Sunday night, the championship teams will be set!

Update: The Motor City Madmen held off a furious last-minute charge by the Dragons, and the Dirty Germans held out against the Neanderthals in a barn-burner. Both games came down to the last NHL game of the weekend.

Congrats to Steve and Kristen--they'll be competing for the chance to bring the trophy home over these next two weeks.

Fantasy Hockey '06 Playoffs -- Finals
posted by GJ on April 2, 2007 @ 9:35AM

At the end of week one, Steve appears to have a healthy lead on Kristen for his first-ever Fantasy Hockey Championship. Can he hold on?

In the other inconsequential games, two teams are winning and two losing. I'm so depressed about being out of the finals I don't really even care. ;)

So, Kristen & Steve--you have seven days remaining of your contest. May the best player win!

Congratulations to the Champs, and NHL Playoff Predictions
posted by GJ on April 9, 2007 @ 1:18PM

Congratulations to the Motor City Madmen, champions of the 2007 Baumbach Fantasy Hockey Cup. I'll post the final overall standings soon, but Steve managed to both knock off the defending champ in the semis and then demolish his opponent in the finals. This marks his first win.

OK, time for my first round NHL Playoff predictions:

Western Conference:

(1) Detroit vs (8) Calgary. I'll take Calgary in six. Hands-down, Detroit is going to lose this series.

(2) Anaheim vs (7) Minnesota. Anaheim in seven, though it wouldn't be a shock to see Minnesota in seven.

(3) Vancouver vs (6) Dallas. You're kidding me, right? Vancouver in five.

(4) Nashville vs (5) San Jose. This will be the best series in the West. Nashville in seven....or San Jose.

Eastern Conference:

(1) Buffalo vs (8) New York Islanders. Buffalo is a scary, scary team. New York isn't. Buffalo in five.

(2) New Jersey vs (7) Tampa Bay. I think the last second coaching change is going to hurt the Devils...in the second round. New Jersey in six.

(3) Atlanta vs (6) New York Rangers. New York is hot. Atlanta is not a playoff team. New York in five.

(4) Ottawa vs (5) Pittsburgh. On paper, this series is pretty close. On ice, it's not. One reason: Ray Emery. Pittsburgh in six.

Fantasy Football
posted by GJ on August 12, 2007 @ 10:30PM

Any interest, folks?  Use the comments to let me know if you want to play this year.

Edit 2007/08/15:

Player roster:  Steve, Kristen, Abby, Geoff, Marc, Darcy, GJ.  Dad is a definite no, Eric is unknown.  We need an even number of players, so Darcy will drop out if needed.

Draft will be held next week--you should get email invites to the league tonight.  I think I have all of your email addresses, so ping me if you don't see anything by noon tomorrow.  I strongly urge you to take part in the live internet draft--if you don't, you have a good chance of getting a downright stinky team.

There is a wealth of FFL resources out there on the web, both free and not-so-free.  Draft strategy--don't draft kickers and team defense in the first six rounds.  Don't draft a quarterback in round 1.  Beyond that, you're on your own!

We need to think about getting a trophy for this one, too.   Steve and I ponied up for the hockey one--who wants to grab one for football?

Edit 2007/08/18:  league id is 492960.  Password corvette, and you can register at http://fantasy.yahoo.com.  It's the free football league btw.

posted by GJ on September 6, 2007 @ 2:31PM

First up, Fantasy Football starts tonight, as the first NFL game kicks off at 8:30pm ET.  If you have players on the Saints or Colts, make sure they're starting or benched as appropriate, since they're locked in place after 8:30pm.

Next up, Fantasy Hockey is ready to go.  Sign up now here and specify league id 30987 and a password of corvette.  Live draft is tentatively scheduled for Sunday 9/16 at 3pm.  You may offer alternate timing suggestions in the comments.

Rule changes:  none so far.  We could rearrange categories (add, subtract, change)--yet me know what you think.

Fantasy Hockey Draft Time
posted by GJ on September 15, 2007 @ 6:30AM

Our draft is set for 3pm ET tomorrow.  We have only seven players to date--which we can play with, but that means one team will be on a bye each week, unless we land someone else.  Thanks to all those who have registered!

The live draft isn't as critical here as it is in football, but you can still make a difference for yourself if you're smart about things.  I'll let you in on a few secrets for the live draft:

1.  Yahoo's proxy drafter picks in the order of your preranks, or if you have none, it picks in the order of the Yahoo default ranks.  Our rules are a bit different from the standard rules--especially given that we play head to head, so the Yahoo order isn't quite right for our league.  The proxy picker will pick a maximum number of forwards, defense, and goalies, so you don't end up with all forwards.

2.  For the live draft, you know that you want a team that is balanced across the categories.  You don't get much in the way of bonus points for scoring twice as many goals as the other team...you need to beat them in more categories, remember?  So, look for role players--get some goal happy folks, assist happy folks, enforcers, power play specialists, defensive specialists, etc.  For goalies--same thing.  Some are better than others with shutouts, wins, and gaa.

3.  In terms of marquee players, watch out for goalies.  You need three starters to be competitive in this league--and with seven teams, that's 21 goalies.  Guess what?  Not every team uses a single starter.  Consider yourself warned.

Rule change from last year is still in effect:  each week, you play six forwards, four defense, and two goalies.

Fantasy Hockey Draft Update

Our draft has been cancelled--apparently, we have to have an even number of teams to play this year.  So...let's see what we can do to track down one more player!

Fantasy Hockey Season Start
posted by GJ on September 26, 2007 @ 10:59AM

Get your lines ready--first round of games begins Monday.  Also, scan your lineup--several big names were injured during training camp, and there are some other big names who are toying with retirement.  Gutsy move by Steve to pick up Teemu Selanne as a free agent, as he's one of those who may not come back.  If he does, well, then it's a very shrewd move indeed.

Anyhow, good luck to all!  I'm gonna win back my crown this year, dang it!
