Week 4 and 5 Summaries

Another two weeks come and gone, and what do we find? The Dragons are on top of the world, beating the Fumblers 88-75 and the Dark Wildcats 102-77. Also on the move up are the Civilwarriors, beating the Bushwhackers 75-55 and the Sea Lions 102-63. The vaunted Dark Wildcats had a rough two weeks, losing the the Dragons above and also to the Bushwhackers, 64-60. Joining them in the winless for two weeks category were the Sea Lions, losing to the Civilwarriors above and also to the Fumblers 98-64. The Bushwhackers and the Fumblers both went splitsville, each 1-1 for the past two weeks.

Standings:

Dragons, 4-1
Dark Wildcats, 3-2
Civilwarriors, 3-2
Fumblers, 2-3
Sea Lions 2-3
Bushwhackers, 1-4

Awards:

Highest score: Week 4, Civilwarriors 102. Week 5, Dragons 102.

Lowest score: Week 4, Dark Wildcats 60. Week 5, Bushwhackers 55.

Highest scoring player: Week 4, Steve Smith, Dragons, 25 pts. Week 5, Roddy White, Fumblers, 33 pts.

Oops, I played the wrong guy: No idea, ESPN's previous week stats still show projected numbers, not real numbers, for players that were on the bench.

Fantasy Football, Week 3 Summary

Another week come and gone, and what do we find? Holy crap, Abby's team is the bomb! The Dark Wildcats manhandled the Southfield Sea Lions to the tune of 82-47. Other action: the Dragons barely staved off the Bushwackers 90-84, and the Civilwarriors picked up their first win in style, crushing the hapless Freeflicker Fumblers 118-72.

That puts the Dark Wildcats all alone at the top with a 3-0 record.

Awards:

Highest score: Civilwarriors, 118

Lowest score: Sea Lions, 47 (record)

Highest scoring player: Maurice Jones-Drew, Fumblers, 31 pts

Oops, I played the wrong guy: not me this week! Marc played both Terrel Owens AND Wes Welker for 0 points each at WR, while sitting Santana Moss who scored 23 points. Owwwwch.

Fantasy Football, Week 2 Summary

Another week come and gone, and once again we had two somewhat close games and one total blowout. This time, it was the Dark Wildcats with the top score, beating the Freeflicker Fumbers 150-98. Boy, it sucks when you score almost 100 point and still get killed.

In the other games, the Dragons nipped the Civilwarriors 98-72, and the Sea Lions barely brushed aside the Bushwackers 90-86. That makes the Wilcats and the Sea Lions the only undefeated teams left in the league, so guess who play each other this week?

Week Two Awards:

Top Scorer: Dark Wildcats, 150 (high mark of the season to date)

Low Score: Civilwarriors, 72 (low mark of the season to date)

Highest Scoring Player: Dark Wildcats, Chris Johnson, 45 points (high mark of the season to date)

Oops I Played The Wrong Guy: Me, again. I played Brandon Jacobs at RB for 5 points instead of Marion Barber for 21 points.

Fantasy Football, Week 1 Summary

The first week is complete, and the scores are in. We had some very close scores, and one unmitigated blowout.

Of the three games, the Dragons - Sea Lions game was over by about 4pm Sunday. The Panthers woeful offense provided most of what the Sea Lions would need in garnering a 130 - 79 drubbing of the Dragons.

The Dark Wildcats opened up a big lead on the Civilwarriors, but a productive Monday night gave the Civilwarrriors a ton of points. Not quite enough, however, and the Dark Wildcats won 77 - 73.

Finally, we saw the Bushwhackers run up the score on the Fumblers, only to see the Fumblers also rack up big points Monday night. Unlike the Civilwarriors, the Fumblers lucked out and picked off the Bushwackers 96-94.

Week One Awards:

Highest Score: Sea Lions, 130

Lowest Score: Civilwarriors, 73

Highest scoring player: Dragons, Adrian Peterson, 37 points

Oops I played the wrong guy: Dragons, played Greg Olsen at TE for 0 points instead of Tony Gonzales for 13.

Fantasy Sports....does anyone care?

Fantasy fooball and hockey didn't seem to get a lot of traction from users last year. Has it outlived its novelty? I don't want to guilt people into playing this year.

So, love it, hate it, could care less about it? Sound off! Football would have to start soon if we want to do that this year.

I enjoyed it when I had time (aka when I was single). I STILL owe Darcy the Trophy from hockey, and whomever else won it this year (guessing it was someone from the same household...but haven't even logged in to Fantasy Hockey since maybe January). Still need to get it engraved too. I like Fantasy Football because you only have to update your lines once a week. Hockey gets old because you have to update your lines for every day of games, and watch for when people get hurt. And that takes a bit of research, because they may sit out games for over a week before yahoo labels them as IR or "maybe" or whatever moniker they use. And they may just sit out a week because of a sprain and yahoo never marks them as being out. At least in football, they mark "possible," "likely," and stuff. Much easier to track.

So I'd be game for Football again. Hockey, I'd sign up for, but probably wouldn't put too much effort into it unless Parsla dumps me. Which since I haven't mowed her lawn in several weeks, she just might!

I'm definitely in for any of them. I'm already in a Fantasy Football league (on Yahoo) with some guys at work, so I'll already be paying attention for that league. So yea, count me in.

I think Steve pointed to the reason why people drop off in hockey--it is a fair amount of work.

I don't find football to be any less work--but there is so much infrastructure for fantasy football these days, it's easy to get high quality reports on your players to choose the right starters.

Hockey has no real good infrastructure--it's a lot of what you know and how much you watch / track stats. There is no mystery why the same people keep winning in hockey, or why a particular household does pretty freaking well.

Football can be a lot of fun, I think--more fun than hockey, although I have enjoyed hockey quite a bit myself. That said, football isn't much fun with only four to six players. Gets far more exciting with 8-10.

League is setup. Log into ESPN tomorrow morning to see what team you got stuck with--log in before then to set draft order, rankings, etc.

Football is up and running--draft held at 5am this morning. Please log into ESPN and set your lines, as the first NFL game is tonight. ESPN does a pretty good job of setting the lines for the first week--it takes your highest rated draftees, which is probably what you'd pick anyway, but has no vision regarding player injuries (and trust me, there are a few already this year).

If anyone is in the market for a RB, I might be in need of a WR or QB. You know where to find me.

ESPN Fantasy is TERRIBLE

OK...can anyone tell me where our Fantasy hockey league is? I used to be able to go from Fantasy football to Fantasy hockey and my team info would be in the upper right pane. Now it just says "2009 registration has ended" and there is no where for me to see my fantasy teams, even when logged in.

I vote next year, we return to Yahoo.

Let me know if you didn't get an invite, and want to participate this year. I think I got everyone covered, but I am getting old and feebleminded. Also, put some thought into a draft date. Does this weekend work? The season start 10/2 or 10/4, so we have to have it soon.

ESPN Fantasy Football

OK, so thoughts on ESPN Fantasy sports. I pretty much hate it.

A: It doesn't allow me to change players in Safari, at all.

B: I can't do my cool drag and drop player swatch when it does work

C: I have to first move my players, then, approve my changes. If I told them to move, they should move! Must be taking hints from Vista's User Account Control.

Dude, your point B is the same as point C. So, basically, you dislike the slick lineup setup that yahoo had. Tough noodles.

Espn's smack commenting, live scoring, player info dialogs, and score board all beat the crap out of yahoo. As painful as you make the lineup change tool out to be, it's not that bad.

Finally....ESPN makes score corrections, something Yahoo doesn't do. In a close game (we had two this week) that could mean the difference in a win versus a loss.

Still, I'd love to hear from everyone else on this subject. What do you think of ESPN so far?

B is not the same as C......C is a criticism of the current ESPN system. The system wouldn't be so bad, if it didn't require an extra, unnecessary step.

Point A, being the most critical as I use Safari at home on my Mac. I don't use Firefox on my mac because it is grossly slow.

So yes, the lineup change tool does blow.

Lastly, I find it a bit more difficult to interpret some of the data vs yahoo on the scoreboard. I'm sure the more I see the system, I will get used to it, but I think their is some poor GUI going on in some areas (other areas are very good).

As for live scoring...I don't sit by my computer and watch my fantasy score as the games progress. Not as important to me personally.

I wasn't aware Yahoo didn't make score corrections. So you're saying if Yahoo screwed up a score, they just left it screwed up? Perhaps this is why I lost the finals to Marc. Obviously it wasn't a result of Brady...thats for sure. :)

Correct. Yahoo does not make much in the way of score corrections--while this hasn't bit us in football that I know of, it has bitten us in hockey several times, and actually made the difference in a playoff game a few years b
Point A: There are lots of web apps out there that don't like certain browers. Most are IE-specific, some are firefox-specific. Yeah, it sucks that it doesn't work on Safari. However, you're the first to make this complaint, so for now I'm not considering it a major suckage point.

Point C: Almost all websites today still use forms with submit buttons. Yahoo doesn't. ESPN, Fanball, and pretty much every other fantasy football site does. Strangely, Yahoo isn't the market leader in fantasy football. I'm guessing they don't get many complaints about their lineup tools. Yes, you like Yahoo's system. Guess what? I like ESPNs...because I CAN USE IT IN A SMALL WINDOW. Try dragging and dropping when the window can't show you the whole lineup...some of us like to click on the player to replace, then scroll down to the list of players and play around with who to sub in. It's a matter of personal preference, and again, so far, you're the only complainer. This isn't a bad design...it's a different design--one that likely suits their subscribes to a large degree. Yahoo caters to a more casual player, so their setup fits their site well. One isn't just naturally better than the other, in my opinion.

Point B: Please rephrase. I don't see how this isn't covered above, so elucidate me.

Point D: interpretation of data. Again, Yahoo caters to a more casual crowd. I think you'll learn to appreciate ESPN's info.

Point E: Live scoring is fun for some people, not for others. It's a lot more fun when it's free. Yahoo charges $10 for that privilege.

Moving fantasy sports to ESPN

OK, folks...I'm seriously planning to move both our football and hockey leagues to ESPN. Thoughts?

Biggest plus: free live scoring in both! Woohoo! Also, we can do keepers in both leagues.

For football, I will do the draft so that we all get the same players that we have in the current Yahoo league.
