Where do I even begin?? Did Buzz say he saw an alien? No. What he saw was a unidentified object...not an unidentified flying object.

Want to know what he saw? What year was this? 1969. How many years had we been firing up unmanned satellites? The Russians started in 1957. You realize that we have a lot of "junk" in space due to launches, right? Back in 1969, most folks assumed the various junk items in space introduced by humans would fall back to earth and burn up in the atmosphere in short order. As it turns out, they were wrong, and we now have a LOT of metal junk in space. So, let's apply a bit of Occam's Razor to this:

Is it likely this object seen was a space ship? Or scrap? You notice that Buzz isn't sure how far away the object is--other than he's sure it's not the booster, since that's 6,000 miles away. So...if you can't tell how far away the item is, it's really hard to judge the size of the object. Again--what's more likely?

See, you would think these astronauts would be able to determine the difference between space junk (and this is 1969...how much space junk could there really be?) and possible alien space craft.

Now, the fact that this has been reported by other space flights, would suggest that either the aliens are persistent, or that it is space junk. So one would assume it is more likely space junk, but they assume wrong because aliens are persistent, I mean look at how many stupid farmers they abduct?

My deductive reasoning is astonishing, it's only a matter of time before I'm acknowledged in the field of Science as the supreme being (Science, ha, I mean Scientology).

Your idea of space junk probably looks like what's in your garbage can. Remember, in 1969, they have no idea what Russian space craft look like, and they don't know what kind of junk is being dropped into orbit. You're right--there isn't much garbage in space yet in 1969...so it's appearance would be confusing to anyone not expecting to see it. Note that you aren't seeing space shuttle commanders talking about this kind of thing--because they see it all the time now.

Tinley Park UFO Sighting. Saw this on UFO hunters premier tonight on the History Channel. An interesting UFO case which is still searching for an answer. Has lots of good footage from many witnesses of a triangular shape with three lights on each end...with a size roughly about 1500 feet in length +/- 100-200ft in the sky. Even had a helicopter fly by it at one point. Aliens? Maybe. Weatherballoons, definitly not. Perhaps a secret government aircraft. You decide!

The weather balloon item you throw out is what's known in the business as a red herring. Just sayin'. Also, that link--ewww--those guys are not what I'd call "level-headed."

The timing of these events (happened multiple times, twice on Halloween) is highly suspect. The size calculations are interesting...but something that size would have been picked up by radar if it ever got higher than the specified elevation, seeing as this thing was in the airspace shared by O'Hare and Midway airports. They don't take unidentified "things" of that size lightly, as they'd make for a severe collision hazard.

So...aliens? Since we have no aliens to compare against, nope. Might as well be a pink unicorn.

Secret military aircraft? Not that close to the busiest airport in the USA.

Hoax? Seems awfully likely. There is definitely precedent for this.

Natural phenomena? Possibly, but if so, it's something not previously identified.

Don't take the numbers that the UFO hunters special came up with as truth. Photographic analysis is often skewed to prove a point. I'd love to see an in-depth analysis done by a skeptical group, as I'm sure there are all sorts of "interesting" evidence that mucks up this wonderful "aliens are here" evidence.

It would be one heck of a Hoax. They attempted to build a ridid "craft" of PVC pipe tied to weather balloons and hang three flares off of it. Needless to say, that couldn't get off the ground with the three weather balloons they had (and a 15ft rigid structure vs 1500ft). They instead had to string the three balloons together and attach a flare to each one to get it off the ground.

Nothing like it and it was less windy that day too (12mph for the test vs 30mph in 2004). I would love to hear an explanation of what it could be since yes, radar didn't pick it up, but clearly something was recorded and seen by hundreds of people. It is way too big to be anything commercial or military (as it dwarfed the helicopter that passed by it). Assuming it was a craft of some sort.

Doubtful it was alien though because no cows were reported stolen.

Sounds like these guys would make poor Mythbusters. I know I'd come up with a better attempt than that, for crying out loud.

And, as I've explained to you in my IMs, but you have yet to understand, the size of this thing is not easily measured and is quite likely nowhere near as big as the pictures and video appear to suggest. I'd like to see some real scientist-types take a hack at this--say, like, the MYTHBUSTERS!

I'm starting to question the Mythbusters. A lot of their episodes have been about getting trashed and seeing how well they function while fairly intoxicated. I'd be more likely to label them as alcoholics than scientists. :)

yup it would be cool to know. I don't think it is an alien craft, but it doesn't mean they aren't behind it in some way. I mean common, they run our government!

So long as they're not blowing stuff up intoxicated, they're doing fine. They'd done some great science stuff this year--and the finding regarding the blind drivers was eye-opening, pardon the pun.

I started watching the blind driver episode on my DVR, paused it to watch later, came back and the entire episode was gone. But that's an entire blog topic on its own. But I agree, so far so good this season.
