401K: Worth It Anymore?
posted by Marc on September 30, 2008 @ 10:23AM
So the stock market is falling apart, the country is in >$10 trillion worth of debt. How's your 401K doing? I've only just begun mine at IBM, but if I didn't know any better, it would look like I was throwing that money I planned on saving for retirement into a black hole. Yea, the matching is great, but not when you're losing money at an unbelievable rate. I imagine some of you guys out there with much bigger 401Ks have some worries. I know like most anything else economy related, we'll eventually fix it...and that pulling money out of banks and 401Ks will likely only make the problem worse, but where do we draw the line? I'm losing money to help who out? People in debt? Executives who aren't getting quite as high a paycheck? I'm pretty new to all of this, and likely being too simplistic, but it's not looking like too bad of an idea to temporarily stop the 401K.

Fantasy Hockey now live!
posted by GJ on September 24, 2008 @ 6:57AM
So what are you waiting for? Register! Let me know if you didn't get an invite, and want to participate this year. I think I got everyone covered, but I am getting old and feebleminded. Also, put some thought into a draft date. Does this weekend work? The season start 10/2 or 10/4, so we have to have it soon.

Not so funny story, but a funny ending
posted by GJ on September 23, 2008 @ 8:49AM
You've probably heard me crow about my mechanic, and the great job his shop does on my two vehicles. This shop, Broadway Auto Clinic of Albany, NY is owned by Rick and Sandra Hameroff, and they opened for business in 1995. I first used their shop in 2004, and have been a loyal customer ever since. Anyhow, they had a dream of moving out of their tiny cubbyhole of a garage. The current shop is basically two stalls and a *very* tiny office / waiting area, and they share a small parking lot with a gas station. It's not a great setup, but the location is terrific for the bulk of their customers. They were saving up to move to a new location in Menands, about five miles from their current site, which would allow them to expand their business quite a bit. Cut to December 2006. A development group headed up by some of the folks behind the Destiny USA project in Syracuse, calling themselves Albany Soma, purchased the land that Broadway Auto was operating on (with a lease) with the intent of using it to build a new downtown development project. What follows is a sordid tale of the developer, cushy with local government, declaring the lease null and void, harrassing the Hameroffs to get them to move, and other not-so-legal manuevers. Almost a year and a half later, it ends in a court battle. You can find a nice summary of this whole story here. Now comes this latest gem--and it's priceless! Talk about karma.

Rock Band 2 Review
posted by Marc on September 19, 2008 @ 2:47PM
Rock Band 2 was released this past Sunday and naturally I had to upgrade. I'm going to give a brief review of what I've seen so far and then tell you why you should all go out and get an Xbox 360 and Rock Band 2. First, probably the biggest change is the instruments. Harmonix, the developer of Rock Band and Rock Band 2, spent a lot of time making sure the new instruments were not only more durable, but also fixed all the little annoying things. For a start, the new guitar and drums are now wireless. Only problem: the microphone and bass guitar are not. I have no clue why those are wired, especially the microphone. The microphone does have built in buttons now, so you don't need a controller to navigate through the menus. Wait...did you just notice I said bass guitar? Yes, Harmonix has developed a bass guitar, with a split strumming bar and a thumb rest so you can noodle on the bass as good as Geddy Lee (Just kidding...you're not that good...but I needed a way to bring up Rush in the beginning of the article, as I'm coming back to them). The drums get their own paragraph, mostly because they had the biggest upgrade and also because that last one was getting pretty big. So here's the upgrades: - The drums are much more durable. The bass pedal has reinforced metal to keep it from snapping, which happened to a lot of customers.
- Much more responsive in terms of picking up notes. You saw the drummer in the family struggling a bit on the first Rock Band. Well, it wasn't his fault. But if he screws up on these new drums, then we can really start making fun of him. :)
- Give a lot better bounceback in order to do rolls more easily.
- All the pads are velocity sensitive now. The harder you whack them, the louder they are in game.
- The drums now have 4 extra ports on the back for expansion. Three of them are for a a cymbal expansion pack, due out next week. The fourth is for another bass pedal.
- The pads are MUCH quieter. So now we can play into the wee hours of the morning without waking the kids.
- Can now be used in the game like a regular electronic drum set. This is more a feature of the game than the drums, but essentially you load up the Freestyle Drum Trainer and pick how you want your drums to sound and begin your drum solo. This mode is AWESOME.
So how's the game? Well...not much different. Mostly because the game was pretty perfect from the start. There's a couple new modes, including the Online Band World Tour mode, where people (read: all of us) can get online, form a band and start playing together. This mode is a lot of fun and I've spent probably 95% of my time on it. Another new mode is Battle of the Bands, where essentially Harmonix picks a setlist every day, you go online with your band and try to get the highest score against everybody in the world. While this is neat, there are lot of unbelievably good people online, so you'll never top the list. (To give you a hint, I played with the currently ranked second place drummer in this mode, and we came in 70th in the world. We were both ecstatic, but it's not even close to first. This was also only a day after the game came out, so competition is ever increasing). Finally, a new mode which some of the not so good people might like is the No Fail mode. Like playing on Expert or Hard because it feels more like you're playing the song, but can't quite hack it yet? No Fail lets you play through to your hearts content. I haven't tried this mode, but I imagine the crowd still boos you quite a bit, so you might want to turn the Crowd Volume down a bit. :) The real cool part about Rock Band 2 is the downloadable content (DLC). First up, they let you import your songs from Rock Band 1 for $5. So I got to sell all my Rock Band 1 stuff on eBay and can still play all of the songs (Except a couple...Metallica decided they'd rather have a Guitar Hero: Metallica game than allow Enter Sandman to be transferred to Rock Band 2...but Metallica sucks anyway). Finally, Rock Band releases a new set of songs every week, you can see what they have released here. There's a wide range of the types of songs available. Each song is about $2, which is pretty reasonable. And speaking of DLC, Rush's Moving Pictures album is going to be released in its entirety next week. It is expected to be the highest grossing album on Rock Band to date (Even beating out a previous The Who album released). As you can tell, I am not excited one bit about this news, but I thought GJ might want to know. Overall, the game is hours of fun. I plan to bring home the Xbox 360, Rock Band 2, Guitar, Bass, Drums, and Mic home for Thanksgiving and Christmas (As long as I've got the time off for both!), but if you have a sudden desire to go out and buy an Xbox 360 and Rock Band, hit my gamer tag "Hgoale" up and we'll get rocking.

Good Old Games
posted by GJ on September 11, 2008 @ 12:46PM
Buring desire to play older games--especially Interplay ones from the mid90s? Conquest of the New World, Colin McRae Rally, Stonekeep, Fallout, etc...all great games. A new service is offering older games (both DOS and Windows games) on the cheap ($5.99), no DRM, and they are "tweaked" to run correctly on your much newer, faster system. Having played with getting CNW working in DosBox and never being 100% successful, I purchased it and found that their tweaking (still using DosBox) put me to shame. The game runs great, and is eminently playable. Sign up now at Good Old Games as a open beta member, and take advantage of the buy one, get one offer for your first purchase.

ESPN Fantasy Football
posted by Geoff on September 9, 2008 @ 11:06PM
OK, so thoughts on ESPN Fantasy sports. I pretty much hate it. A: It doesn't allow me to change players in Safari, at all. B: I can't do my cool drag and drop player swatch when it does work C: I have to first move my players, then, approve my changes. If I told them to move, they should move! Must be taking hints from Vista's User Account Control.
