Letter from GM to Thomas Friedman

Take a look at this letter on the GM Fastlane Blog. My rebuttal: - For 2009, GM will offer 20 models that get 30 MPG or better. First--that 30mpg number is highway. Few of us get that high range, do we? Second--it's how many cars you sell that have that "feature," not how many varieties of vehicle you sell that have that feature. Besides, take out brand duplication, and what are you now down to? My guess is, Toyota sells more Civics than the lion's share of 30mpg cars in GM's lineup combined.
- We have six hybrid vehicles. Dummies, hybrid trucks are a wildly stupid idea. Don't count them. Oh, and what percent of the hybrid market do you have? Also, what kind of mileage do your hybrids get?
- We make all sorts of flex-fuel cars. Hey idiots--ethanol is a really piss poor energy solution. In this country, it drives up the price of corn (which not only feeds us, but feeds our meat industry), and it is very expensive to make. Even switchgrass ethanol isn't a great option, mostly due to the amount of land it would take to make a dent in our usage of oil. Next bullet point!
- Fuel cell vehicles--hey, some progress! OK, score GM one valid point.
- Ah, the Chevy Volt...perhaps the biggest shell game GM has ever tried to pull off. Let me see....a $40k+ commuter car, which gets 40 miles on a charge in perfect conditions...most of us don't live in that perfect world...and add to it that they're lying about the gas mileage this thing gets in motor-operating mode, too. There's nothing new about this car--they used to use this same kind of propulsion system in diesel subs, and they've since been replaced by nuclear subs. So...it's old technology, nowhere near as efficient as GM is claiming...and it's somehow going to save the company.
GM is still in la-la land. And that's numero uno why I don't want to fund any kind of bailout / loan / whatever for them--because we'd be throwing our money away.
