ESPN Fantasy is TERRIBLE
posted by Geoff on December 1, 2008 @ 11:16PM
OK...can anyone tell me where our Fantasy hockey league is? I used to be able to go from Fantasy football to Fantasy hockey and my team info would be in the upper right pane. Now it just says "2009 registration has ended" and there is no where for me to see my fantasy teams, even when logged in. I vote next year, we return to Yahoo.

Thanks for Thanksgiving!
posted by Steve on December 1, 2008 @ 9:10AM
I just wanted to say thanks to everyone for a wonderful thanksgiving. The pies were delicious (thanks Michelle and Mom!). Dinner was great every night. Playing the wii and Xbox360 was fun too, mostly because it was fun to play it with all you guys and your kids. And I'm especially thankful for all of your support for me and Parsla, you guys made it much easier for me to deal with my worries about her after the accident, and after learning about her loosing her job. And Ashlyn is such a cute loving baby - the only thing I'm sorry about is I didn't get back to NY to see her sooner! Hope you all had safe travels home, can't wait to see you in December, where I'll blow you all away in Settlers of Catan!

Computer Conundrum
posted by Geoff on November 24, 2008 @ 8:17PM
Ok so I have been having this random computer problem. Totally random. My computer, at random, will restart. No blue screen (I've enabled it to show me as suggested by Marc), no nothing. It just restarts like I pressed the reset button. I assume this is a hardware issue for the reasons below. Here is what I've done to try and remedy it: - replaced my RAID array of 200GB hard drives with 1 500GB hard drive
- went from Windows XP 32bit and installed brand new copy of Windows Vista 32bit
- all updates had been applied to both OS's
- disabled all energy performance
So, seeing as it was happening in both XP and now my newly installed Vista (with no software except for the OS)...it must be hardware or firmware related IMO. I did add new memory awhile back and the problem started sometime after that, though not immediatly after it. That has been the only hardware change to my system in 4 years. Any ideas?

Need some help - best home networking setup?
posted by Steve on November 23, 2008 @ 12:57PM
I'm trying to set up a network at home. I have two desktop PCs that I want to be able to use the internet from, and one printer, which I'd like to be able to print to from either computer. The computers are in different rooms. I like the convenience of being able to just run a wireless network, as I can run my work laptop through it too. My question is, do you guys know the best way to do this? I was thinking I'd need a wireless router stationed near one computer. That computer would get wired in to the wireless router. The other computer would have a wireless card installed, and access the internet through that. That wireless PC would also have the printer hooked up to it. Can I print to the printer from the wired in computer, even if the printer is attached to the wireless computer? Would I need anything more to make that happen? Is it better to have the printer attached to the wired in computer, or does it not matter? Would I see a noticeable decrease in download speed on the internet for wireless? Not for webpages, I'm sure, but how about downloading files? I tend to run bittorrent downloading tV shows once in a while, think it would have any probalem running over wireless? Thoughts? Comments? Experiences with wireless networks or components - good or bad? Wireless -g or -n? Thanks!

Thankgiving Topics
posted by GJ on November 19, 2008 @ 8:50PM
OK, here's the annual Turkey Day Thread. First up, who is coming when? We think we might come out Wednesday night, spend Wednesday at the homestead, then spend Thur-Sat at Hampton Inn. Things to do: - movies: I know Abby wants to see (what else) Twilight. Who else is interested?
- games: We have a new game called Last Word, and will once again bring Ticket to Ride. I hear Steve has Settlers of Cataan and I'm looking forward to that one too. We'll probably also throw in Apples (like Abby will leave us any choice) and UNO. Any other requests?
- food: bah, I mean cookies. Requests? (Darcy's gonna kill me).
- TROPHY. Steve knows what I'm talking about. See above parenthesis comment and insert your name there if you forget it! :)
- truce: I promise not to argue about the auto bailout, the volt, the existence of a supreme being, and the fact that Rush sucks (especially Neal Peart). Geez, I'm gonna be speechless. LOL.
What else is there? Comment away!

Letter from GM to Thomas Friedman
posted by GJ on November 19, 2008 @ 10:44AM
Take a look at this letter on the GM Fastlane Blog. My rebuttal: - For 2009, GM will offer 20 models that get 30 MPG or better. First--that 30mpg number is highway. Few of us get that high range, do we? Second--it's how many cars you sell that have that "feature," not how many varieties of vehicle you sell that have that feature. Besides, take out brand duplication, and what are you now down to? My guess is, Toyota sells more Civics than the lion's share of 30mpg cars in GM's lineup combined.
- We have six hybrid vehicles. Dummies, hybrid trucks are a wildly stupid idea. Don't count them. Oh, and what percent of the hybrid market do you have? Also, what kind of mileage do your hybrids get?
- We make all sorts of flex-fuel cars. Hey idiots--ethanol is a really piss poor energy solution. In this country, it drives up the price of corn (which not only feeds us, but feeds our meat industry), and it is very expensive to make. Even switchgrass ethanol isn't a great option, mostly due to the amount of land it would take to make a dent in our usage of oil. Next bullet point!
- Fuel cell vehicles--hey, some progress! OK, score GM one valid point.
- Ah, the Chevy Volt...perhaps the biggest shell game GM has ever tried to pull off. Let me see....a $40k+ commuter car, which gets 40 miles on a charge in perfect conditions...most of us don't live in that perfect world...and add to it that they're lying about the gas mileage this thing gets in motor-operating mode, too. There's nothing new about this car--they used to use this same kind of propulsion system in diesel subs, and they've since been replaced by nuclear subs. So...it's old technology, nowhere near as efficient as GM is claiming...and it's somehow going to save the company.
GM is still in la-la land. And that's numero uno why I don't want to fund any kind of bailout / loan / whatever for them--because we'd be throwing our money away.
