Frets on Fire - Guitar Hero for the Computer!
posted by Marc on August 1, 2007 @ 10:01AM

Frets on Fire is a game that is made for the computer that emulates Guitar Hero. The graphics aren't the best, but then again neither is Guitar Hero's and who's paying attention anyway? The game works on all of the major operating systems (PC, Mac, Linux), although from what I've heard, it's very buggy on the Mac.

So what's better about it? Well, for one it's open source and therefore free. It also lets you make your own songs. A lot of people have made songs already for pretty much every band. I went ahead and grabbed a bunch of Rush songs last night and was jamming to 2112, Tom Sawyer, and Circumstances, it was great! I found it to run a bit sluggish in Vista, but my guess is that is partly Vista's fault.

To top it off, you can buy a Playstation to USB adapter for your Guitar Hero controllers and hook them up to your computer to play the game. Only problem with the whole thing is I don't see any multiplayer, so it looks like Rock Band will blow it away, but I thought I'd mention it in case people were interested in playing around with it.

Vector Art EPS file
posted by Steve on July 31, 2007 @ 10:21PM

Hey you computer/internet/art guys, do any of you have software that can turn a bitmap file into an EPS file?  I will have a bitmap file that we are going to have printed on glasses as trophies for an upcoming autocross, but the company that makes the glasses wants $25 per file to convert to an EPS file.  If it's fairly easy, and one of you guys has the capability and willingness to do it for free, I'd appreciate it.

One of the best discusssions on FARK....regarding the identification of a UFO
posted by GJ on July 31, 2007 @ 9:06PM

This particular user, forked_at_fark, had a problem--she took a picture of something she thought might be a UFO, and posted it to FARK looking for help.  The ensuing discussion has become one of the most popular ones ever on FARK, even to the point that it's now the internet cliche "It's a streetlight!"

It's a must read, albeit a long one.  Not for kids nor the overly sensitive, like anything else on FARK.

Update on Pat Tillman's Death
posted by GJ on July 27, 2007 @ 8:10AM

You remember Pat Tillman, right?  He's the former Arizona Cardinal football player (that's the NFL, for those of you not in the know) who decided to join up with the Army Rangers after 9/11 and was deployed to Afghanistan.  He never made it home--shot dead by the enemy, or so the govermnent first said.

Then, the story changed.  It became a friendly-fire incident, because he was killed by a NATO bullet.  Big controversy--see, the government stuck to its original story until this little bit of evidence came to light.  Jerks.

But oh no, it gets much better.  See, Pat was an atheist.  In a foxhole, so to speak.  So much for that old saying.  But that's not the real scoop.

Anyhow, it turns out Pat Tillman was shot at a range of 10 meters, with three closely spaced shots to the forehead with an automatic weapon.  TEN METERS is THIRTY FREAKING FEET.  Three bullets from an automatic weapon is pretty tough to put all in close proximity to one another....unless, of course, it's an ambush and you're set to aborb the rifle recoil.  That's intentional murder, folks...a far cry from the war hero image the government first tried to play up.

Can we impeach Bush now?  And Cheney, too?  And please get rid of Gonzales--it's embarrassing to even have that guy testify in public.  I really, honestly, truly believe Bush will eclispse Hoover, Harding, and Grant as the worst presidents in our history.  And, oh, have I got a cartoon for you:
