Fantasy Hockey starting soon!
posted by GJ on October 1, 2005 @ 6:16PM

Get your lineups ready! The NHL season officially starts on Wednesday, October 5th.

Generally, a week runs from Monday - Sunday. This week still counts, even though it only covers Wednesday - Sunday.

Word of warning--some players have still not signed on with their teams. If your player has an NA next to their name, chances are they fall into this category.

Interesting Tire Test - Winter tires vs. All Season vs. Summer Only
posted by Steve on September 29, 2005 @ 10:13PM

Thought some of you might find this interesting. Tirerack.com did a test comparing a couple winter tires versus a popular all season tire vs. a ultra high performance summer tire on an ice rink. You can read the article below. What I found most interesting, is that the "all season" tire is not much better than the ultra high performance summer tire on the ice.

My new toy too!

After almost 6 long years with my Gateway PC, it is time to upgrade (thank god!). The company decided a Mac PowerBook 17" bonzer laptop should do the trick, and I agreed haha.

This SRT-17 boasts a similar turbocharged engine, computer chip (or 2), 512MB of horsepower (upgradeable to 2 GBs when the time comes), Short-Scroll Mate shifter with the optional manual mighty mouse, MapQuest GPS system, widescreen windshield (Mac truck equivalent), hatchback design, with dolby digital 5.1 surround sound processing. Everything save windshield wipers, this puppy should take to the tracks well, and in unbeatable style too!

Well, I missed out on the limited number of Crossfires they had available, due to website glitches the ordering system was having. So, instead of the Crossfire, I bought this:

Something to think about...
posted by Geoff on September 26, 2005 @ 9:46PM

Just saw a commercial for a reading teacher on DVD that kids can interact with. While this can be a great tool to teach kids how to read...it made me think just how much kids are learning more from machines, than from people.

Is this good or bad? Somehow I feel kids are becoming more disconnected from the world around them. But then again, they are interacting in a different way than we used to. We used to play outside with kids...baseball...kickball...etc. Sure kids still do this...but more and more kids are interacting on the net, playing video games, watching too much TV. Time will tell whether this improves our race or not.

What are your thoughts? I personally feel it just makes us more dependent on machines, and less on instincts. It is inevitable, and I don't think we can stop it...it is evolution. Is this good or bad?

Love to know what you parents think...as I don't have kids to really make a solid argument...just observation.

Free Virus and Spyware Scanning
posted by Geoff on September 26, 2005 @ 1:27PM

Scan Your System

This is a free tool (Internet Application, runs once, doesn't install onto your Hard Drive or anything). This is a great tool as I ran it on both my home and work computer. I actually found a virus on my work computer and McAffee Anti-Virus didn't pick it up, so I encourage you to run it.

Attention!!

Fantasy Hockey Players! Our draft is nigh upon us. This coming Sunday, September 24, at 2pm ET, we will commence a LIVE draft.

You must do a system check (go to the league main page, and follow the directions) prior to joining the draft. Otherwise, you may find that you cannot join.

Here's how it works, based on my experience with it a few years ago:

The order is randomly determined. Each player will have a rank from 1 to 8. Draft order will go like this:

1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1,1,2,3,...etc.

If a player is absent from draft, their predraft order of desired players will be used. If no predraft order exists, the default Yahoo draft order will be used to make a proxy draft selection.

If a player is present, they have a small amount of time (2 min, perhaps) to make their selection. If no selection is made in the time period, the same rules apply as did for the non-present player--a proxy draft pick is performed.

Keep in mind, you will play two C, two RW, two LW, four D, and two G each week. You will have (I think) 4 additional slots for reserve players. You may want to do a little research on certain players prior to the draft, as not everyone has signed a contract yet. That may be a reason to avoid some of the better players--or, if you are confident they will sign, it might be worth the risk. I would be hesitant to rely solely on Yahoo's status flag for each player.

If you leave the draft to the proxy bid, expect to have an even distribution of player/positions on your team. If you are drafting manually, nothing will stop you from loading up on six goalies, if you so desire.

With eight players, talent will be at a premium. You will still see some decent talent in the free agent pool after the draft, but certainly all the franchise players will go in the draft.

Games begin the first week of the regular season--in early to mid October. Game on!

UFOs, Alien abductions, Close Encounters...Lets get it on!
posted by Geoff on September 21, 2005 @ 2:23PM

The previous post mentioned aliens. As we all know, they are a part of our civilization in some way as you can now tell. From Religion to Science and now the BaumBlog, they have made their presence known to us in mysterious ways. I hope all contribute to the question which will surely slap our existence in the face.

Do they exist, have they visited us already, and are they living in a Manhattan Apartment?

These mysteries and more on the next Unsolved Mysteries.

Debate Time!
posted by GJ on September 19, 2005 @ 1:52PM

Question of the day:

Should the government eradicate all evidence of religion from its documents and proceedings (i.e, the "under God" in the pledge, or the national day of prayer the other day, etc.)? Or is the government not doing enough to include God and/or religion in the proceedings?

More news from Fantasy Football Central
posted by GJ on September 19, 2005 @ 7:37AM

The cellar dweller for the past two years is atop the league! Dad trounced Geoff over the weekend to the tune of 59-53, likely placing him in first place and Geoff in last.

In the other game, Steve is schooling GJ 59-49 thanks to a monster game by Donovan McNabb (he threw FIVE touchdowns yesterday). Both have players on the field tonight, but GJ needs Tiki Barber to score two touchdowns more than Joe Horn in order to win. I'm not holding my breath!
